Surfing Panama
There are many great surf spots in Panama. Exposed to both the Caribbean and Pacific, surfers get to hedge their bet with entirely seperate weather and wave conditions on either coast. Also consider that many of the great surf spots are within just a few hours or so from Panama City.
On the Azuero Peninsula, just a day trip from Ojo de Agua, the following breaks stand out:
Playa Venao: One of the most famous surf spots in Panama. Located in the province of Los Santos, waves here are regularly overhead with offshore winds not uncommon.
Guanico: Also in the Los Santos Province, Guanico is on the way to Cambutal. This is a beach break with mulitple peaks. Head high to overhead is common.
Cambutal: Located past Tonosi, also in the Province of Los Santos, this area has a number of lava rock reef breaks and beach breaks.
Santa Catalina: Offering some of the best waves in all of Central and South America. Santa Catalina is located about an hour from the town of Sona, in the Province of Veraguas. This rock bottom break produces perfect barrels, sustained at well over double overhead.
